One of the players takes black "stones" and the other player takes white "stones". The board is a grid of 9 by 9 lines.
The game starts with 4 stones are on the board as shown in the diagram.
Black player starts the game. Each player plays a single stone of their own color. A player can play to any empty intersection. A player may not pass. Once the stone is played it is never moved to another intersection.
L'altro giocatore prende le "pietre" nere e l'altro prende le "pietre" bianche. La tavola è una griglia di 9x9 righe.
Il gioco inizia con 4 pietre sulla tavola nella posizione del diagramma.
Il giocatore nero inizia la partita. I giocatori giocano una singola pietra del loro colore. Si può giocare su ogni intersezione vuota. I giocatori non possono passare il turno. Una volta che una pietra è giocata non si può mai muovere su un'altra intersezione.

A string of stones is captured by playing into string's last liberty. In the diagram white stones (A) are captured when black plays into B. A stone string consists all the stones connected by lines. A string does not connect diagonally.
Si cattura una catena di pietre occupando la sua ultima libertà. Nel diagramma le pietre bianche (A) sono catturate quando nero gioca B. Una catena di pietre è costituita da pietre collegate da linee. Non c'è connessione in diagonale.

The player can capture a stone by playing into its last liberty. In the diagram a white stone A is captured when black plays to B. Liberties are empty intersection connected to a stone by line.
Si possono catturare pietre giocando nella loro ultima libertà. Nel diagramma la pietra bianca A è catturata quando nero gioca in B. Le libertà sono intersezioni vuote collegate ad una pietra con una linea.

If none of the opponent’s stones is in atari, then the player should check if any of his own stones are in atari.
If players stones are in atari, he should try to increase their liberties so that the opponent cannot capture then in his turn.
Useinmiten yksikään vastustajan kivistä ei ole atarissa. Tällöin kannattaa tarkistaa onko jokin omista kivistä atarissa.
Jos kiviä on atarissa, niin niiden vapauksien määrää kannattaa yrittää lisätä.

Toinen pelaaja pelaa mustilla "kivillä" ja toinen pelaaja valkeilla "kivillä". Lauta on 9x9 viivan ristikko.
Peli alkaa kuvan mukaisesta alkutilanteesta.
Musta aloittaa pelin. Pelaaja laittaa yhden oman värisensä kiven laudalle. Kivi laitetaan johonkin tyhjään risteykseen. Pelaaja ei voi passata. Kun kivi on pelattu, sitä ei ikinä siirretä toiseen risteykseen.

Kiviketju vangitaan pelaamalla sen viimeiseen vapauteen. Kuvassa musta voi vangita valkean kivet (A) pelaamalla musta kiven paikkaan B. Kiviketjut muodostuvat viivoja pitkin yhteydessä olevista kivistä. Kiviketjut eivät kytkeydy vinottain.
