Go is usually played in a 19 by 19 board, but smaller boards are better for learning the game. 9 by 9 is the best board to start with. Diagram shows 9x9 board with first three stones played.
In an even game white gets 6.5 extra points to compensate black's right to start the game. If black player is less skilled than white, a handicap can be used to make the game interesting. Black player may get 2 to 9 handicap stones at the start of the game. In a handicap game white gets 0.5 extra points (komi).
Capture-go is a variant of go. In capture-go the goal is to capture opponents stone(s). Capture Go is easier to learn, but still very challenging game.
