One of the players takes black "stones" and the other player takes white "stones". The board is a grid of 9 by 9 lines. The game starts with 4 stones are on the board as shown in the diagram.
Black player starts the game. Each player plays a single stone of their own color. A player can play to any empty intersection. A player may not pass. Once the stone is played it is never moved to another intersection.
Jeden z graczy zbija czarne kamienie a drugi gracz białe. Planszę gry stanowi kratka złożona z 9 poziomych i pionowych linii. Gra rozpoczyna się z kamieniami ułożonymi tak jak na rysunku.
Grę rozpoczyna gracz grający czarnymi kamieniami. Każdy z graczy ustawia na planszy kamienie w swoim kolorze. Kamień może być położony tylko na pustym połączeniu linii. Po położeniu kamienia nie można zmienić jego położenia.

Toinen pelaaja pelaa mustilla "kivillä" ja toinen pelaaja valkeilla "kivillä". Lauta on 9x9 viivan ristikko. Peli alkaa kuvan mukaisesta alkutilanteesta.
Musta aloittaa pelin. Pelaaja laittaa yhden oman värisensä kiven laudalle. Kivi laitetaan johonkin tyhjään risteykseen. Pelaaja ei voi passata. Kun kivi on pelattu, sitä ei ikinä siirretä toiseen risteykseen.
